Estate Planning: An Act of Love - continued As I have written in the past, estate planning enables you to control your property while you are alive, take care of you and your loved ones in the event of disability, and give what you have, to whom you want, the way you want, and when you want, and if you wish, you can save unnecessary court costs, professional fees, and taxes. It is absolutely critical that your estate planning attorney spends the time and effort necessary to determine your needs and desires through skilled questioning and thoughtful listening. It is critical that the attorney present you with recommendations that are appropriate for your circumstances and with which you are comfortable. Make certain that the attorney is willing to refine your plan as necessary. Be sure that the plan is completed on a timely basis. Finally, it is important that you and your attorney review your plan on a regular basis to meet changes in your personal and financial circumstances as well as changes in the law and tax code. A properly designed estate plan can quickly and pleasantly provide you with the ability to meet your needs and the needs of each of your loved ones now and in the future. Can there be a greater act of love? As appeared in Women Today, February 1998 This information was prepared by Lena Barnett & Associates, LLC and is intended only to provide general information.
